Meh, I think Reaper has more new episodes left than smallville. I think once the SV finale plays theyll piggy back reaper and supernatutral. I think thats all they mean.

Another link suggesting that SV will only run through December and end before being replaced by Reaper's new season.

This is the only good thing I've heard about the next season...

According to Ausiello, unless something drastic happens, Chloe is not returning in season 8 and apparently they won't have any problems explaining Chloe's absense next season:

Well we havent heard

Well we havent heard officially what the episode count is for the season. I hope it is full 22 episode order to replace season 7 for being shorter. Also I could see they could be airing reaper during mid season hiatus peroid for smallville and then when smallville is back either move reaper to another day/time if one of their new shows fail or move smallville to another time to finish off the season. But untill we know offically we dont know what is going down. As for season 8 i hope it is good. Yes i is sad to see michael R. leave, and personally glad kristen kruek is gone full time to her character has been so messed up since season 2. As for allsion she is my fav female on the show and i would hate to see her leave the show too, if she isnt back for the full season hopefully she will make a deal for half/handful of episodes to end her character in a better way then what ever happens to her in finale.

Good! Supergirl's effects take too much money and take away from CK's specialness. Her storylines don't seem to be going anywhere.

But this emptying of the cast also worries me.

storm55's picture

Doesn't bother me a bit and

Doesn't bother me a bit and I really wish for a short season. If they had any sense they would explore what happened when Clark went off to do his training....it is a lonely time anyway so not a lot of cast should be needed. A short season all about mythos would be fine by me.

Lencho01's picture

I heard earlier that Kara

I heard earlier that Kara may not be back next season. Then there was news of Into The Blue 2. And now we just had that announcement without any mention of Laura. Hahaha. This is crazy. Cheap straight-to-DVD sequels. And one after a crappy film? Ook.

According to the trailer, Chloe's story seems it could just end with her saving Lana for whatever reason.

When we heared from Emi that Season 8 might have been shortened due to the writers' strike, I thought it would've been a great way for the show to have better stories and tighter writing. But, with all this news about Doomsday and Tess and nothing else about nest season other than its time slot, I don't think it'll turn out good.

So, we'll have a regular season which doesn't seem to have much focus on Clark so far, a regular season that will have some focus on him in one of the arcs, or a shortened season which wouldn't have any focus on him at all, or no season at all. Well, that sucks.

C'est la vie.

Here's news on what went

Here's news on what went down with Laura thanks to Lacroix...

Laura was informed a couple of months ago that they wouldn't be picking up her contract for next year. Apparently they felt they'd exhausted Kara's storyline. This came as a big shock not only to Laura, but to the rest of the cast and crew as well.

Everyone believed that Laura was being groomed to take over the franchise when Tom exited after season 8.

That being said, the way they write her out certainly leaves room for her to come back if need be.

And the budget...

The cuts are pretty extensive, but with the cast that are exiting, they're going to save a lot of money there. They'll also save money by not having to go on location much, thanks to the backlot they built. As well as a number of other changes that have been made. ie: shooting on HD next year. As far as I know, the FX will be pared down in season 8, but it's not like they're going to be eliminated all together. Just don't expect anymore trips through the clock ;)

Boy has CW got their hands full. I have a friend that works there and they say...FWIW....that the playbook is changing everyday and the atmosphere is near panic in parts of the company. He claims the rumor was that season 8 was always planned for 1/2 a season.

Super Exclusive Smallville News: Chloe's Staying!

Smallville fans, consider this bullet officially dodged: Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that after weeks of tense negotiations, Allison Mack has sealed a deal to return next season as a series regular!

[The crowd roars]

Although the specifics of the new contract -- which was signed just hours ago -- are being kept under wraps, I'm told it calls for Mack to appear in all episodes produced next season. As I reported earlier this week, the actress' reps were (wisely) using the imminent departure of Smallville vet Michael Rosenbaum as leverage in the negotiations. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the strategy paid off.

I wonder if Mack's successful renegotiation is somehow connected to the Supergirl storyline being "exhausted" all of a sudden?

Oh well, welcome back Chloe and bye bye Kara.....and thank you for the Beauty Pageant episode!

thecolorsblend's picture

I'm not entirely sure this

I'm not entirely sure this is a good thing. It feels like Chloe's arc has gone full circle. Coming back for season 8 will sort of diminish the Clark/Lois/Jimmy vibe I think the show ought to have by this point. Plus it pretty much allows Clark to keep running to her everytime he needs his shoelaces tied rather than working things out on his own.

As for no more Kara, she brought the Kryptonian angle back to the show and she should be in at least a couple of episodes next season as she still has something to contribute.

Overall, I'm not particularly happy with these developments.

Exclusive: Justin Hartley Eyes Smallville Comeback

It's time for an all-new adventure in arithmetic, Ausholes!

Justin Hartley's CW drama pilot, Austin Golden Hour, failed to receive a pick-up this week.
+
The towering Adonis has a talent-holding deal with the CW, which means the network pretty much owns him for the foreseeable future.
+
His Green Arrow was wildly popular on Smallville, and fans have been clamoring for the Justice Leaguer's return since the moment he left.
+
In light of Michael Rosenbaum's impending Smallville exit — Lex bids adieu in tonight's season finale (8 pm/ET) — and Kristin Kreuk's decreased role next season, the show needs all the familiar faces it can get its hands on.
+
Sources confirm to me exclusively that producers are very keen on bringing Hartley back into the fold ASAP.
=
Duh. Justin Hartley is (probably) returning to Smallville next season as Green Arrow!

Are you guys getting the same thing? Crunch the numbers and let me know!

Smallville Exclusive: Kara's Future Is Up, Up, Up in the Air

A new development tempers the good news about Allison Mack re-signing, which itself improved the mood after Michael Rosenbaum's Smallvile departure was confirmed: Laura Vandervoort's status as Kara is as up-in-the-air as, well, Supergirl in flight.

As fans noticed in the CW's upfronts announcement earlier this week, "They announced the cast... and I'm not a part of it," Vandervoort tells me, letting out a self-effacing laugh. "We were all surprised when they chose not to bring me back as a regular, but I'm sure I'll be back for one or two [episodes]!"

Looking at the bright side, she notes, "The show is about Clark Kent, and I was honored to be a part of it. I mean, my character became more than it was supposed to be. She ended up sticking around the entire season." Stories even surfaced a while ago suggesting that when Tom Welling hangs up his red jacket and blue tee, Kara might be spun off into her own series.

In the meantime, Vandervoort has a hot summer planned — literally. She's now in Hawaii filming Into the Blue 2, a follow-up to the guilty pleasure starring Paul Walker and Jessica Alba. Chris Carmack (The O.C.) plays LV's partner in deep-sea diving and more. "We have a great cast, including also Marsha Thomason (Lost) and David Anders (Heroes)," she shares. "We're very lucky." Comparing Blue 2 to the eye candy-filled original, she says, "This is more of a suspense thriller. But yes, everyone is in bathing suits and stuff like that!"

Report: The Demise of the CW Could Be Near

Got any friends who might like shows on the CW? Find 'em, and get 'em in front of a TV — pronto. The Wall Street Journal says if ratings don't perk up, the CW could fold as soon as next year.

A big part of the ratings issue — the network has lost about 30% of its target of 18 to 34-year-olds — is that its audience spends a lot of free time on the Internet and not in front of the tube. The writers' strike also accelerated the viewership decline.

In an effort to steer eyeballs back to the TV, the network recently pulled free episodes of Gossip Girl from its website, but ratings for the TV show did not improve.

The Journal quotes industry officials as saying it's possible one of the CW's owners — CBS and Time Warner — could cash in and walk away next year.

Rather than go after both men and women age 18 to 34, the CW ditched man-centric shows like WWE SmackDown last spring and repositioned itself as targeting only women in that age group. — J.R. Whalen

Thanks for all the updates

Thanks for all the updates Lencho. Dawn Ostroff is the most incompetent exec in all tv-dom. I don't understand how she still has a job. She took the best of WBtv and UPN and drove it right into the ground. If they wanted young females, why kill Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls? If they want young males, why do a piss poor job of promoting Smallville and Supernatural and forcing both shows to feature more females?

So, when the WSJ says CW could fold next year, do they mean January? What happens to all the shows that are in mid-season then?

Archangel's picture

The issue of targeting ONLY

The issue of targeting ONLY females should be a sign to financial backers CBS and Turner to run for the hills.

The channel could actually fold before the end of this year. If viewership does not increase through the summer and they don't score BIG during November sweeps, they'll go under as fast as HD-DVD did.

Lencho01's picture

No problem. I wouldn't mind

No problem.

I wouldn't mind if CW was gone. But, since it may affect Smallville, I do. I just hope it still sticks around for one more season of Smallville. After Smallville, I'm done with the CW.

Very sad how they screwed up what could've been a great channel with what they had started out with. But, now it's just becoming a channel for little girls an now one else. I guess they just failed to understand what type of shows people want to watch and have lost focus of what type of people their viewers were. 30% is a huge loss in two years and they don't seem to act like their target is 18-43 year olds. And their little plan of taking Gossip Girl offline is evident that people don't care about the show, but the ratings are enough to show that anyway.

Someone put it this way...

"I just thought of something, Gossip Girl is made by the creators of The O.C. The O.C. was a fox show that was modeled after 90210. And they have the 90210 spin off. Ostroff basically wants a knock off version of Fox. But even Fox has a more diversified offering of shows."

Jerrytoons's picture

I'm repeating myself, but I

I'm repeating myself, but I stopped watching Smallville for a very long time, and only in this past season picked back up watching it. (And I wonder why)

Besides the continuity issues related to Superman myth, my biggest reason for dropping the show was the soap opera stuff. "90210"

To me it seems the CW just loads it's programing with heavy laden soap opera, and it's not working for them.

Daytime TV is loaded with soaps, but my wife only watches a couple. That means you can't count on hooking women viewers by turning all your shows into soap operas.

storm55's picture

The 90210 stuff had more to

The 90210 stuff had more to do with the Goughlar than CW. That decision is much more at the tactical level. It is amazing that they miss the boat that their two best shows, Smallville and Supernatural have strong male ratings as well.

A hipper "Hallmark" channel is not going to make it to Christmas. I sure hope that Smallville goes with half a season otherwise there could be trouble.

sharpermom's picture

I do not watch Smallville or

I do not watch Smallville or Supernatural for the soapy elements. I personally hate that. I watch them for the action, suspense, and storyline. Not who are you going to pine over this week crap. I absolutely hated the Clana drama every week. I didn't mind too much at first what was it season 3 but then it got old really fast, and it didn't add anything to the story.

If i wanted to watch soap operas I would tape the damned things that are on during the day. I don't even go to the movies to see supposed "chick flicks" They make me feel ill. I want to go to the movies to feel good not cry. (crying a weakness I abhor).

I want more superman mythos in Smallville, not soap. Don't mind seeing the men with less clothes ;). I can also tolerate for you guys sake less clothing on the females. LOL
